Balancing Manipura (or Solar Plexus) Chakra

person switching lighter

I’ve heard energy workers talk about the solar plexus chakra (or Manipura) as the furnace of the body. Think of it as a wheel in the middle of your body, a bit above your belly navel, and governing the fire elements in your spirit. Balancing Manipura – which translates to “city of jewels” from Sanskrit – usually works best in conjunction with the two lower chakras (root and sacral).

There are so many sayings and phrases that call upon the feeling of fire sensation in the belly. It makes sense that this chakra is closely aligned with the digestive system, but also the gall bladder, pancreas, and liver. And this translates to an emotional place as well. When we’re overwhelmed, exhausted, or just stressed in general, that is usually a cue from our body that we need to rest and digest.

Yoga for the Solar Plexus

Ekhart Yoga recommends these postures for a practice focused on the solar plexus:

  • Dhanurasana (bow pose)
  • Kapalabhati pranayama or breath of fire
  • High Lunge Twist with Anjali mudra (prayer pose)
  • Parvritta Trikonasana (revolved triangle pose)
  • Vajroli Mudra
  • Bhujangasana (cobra pose)

Integrate the Hakini Mudra into your practice as well.

Haikini mudra to help in balancing Manipura

Press your fingers together at the height of your solar plexus chakra, thumbs closest to your body. Hakini mudra is said to help with the 3rd eye, but the effects include things like increasing brainpower, coordination between brain hemispheres, and more that correlate with balancing Manipura.

Sound for Balancing Manipura

RAM is the sound of the solar plexus chakra. It operates on the 364Hz frequency, activating the mind, intention, and intuition.

Manipura Mantras & Meditation

Chanting RAM is of course one way to activate this chakra and bring it online. Choosing a mantra that directly relates to the purpose of the solar plexus can tap into its energy as well. Choose a powerful ‘I am” statement, like I am a powerful creator, I am successful, or even just I am (or I will if you need a moment) 😉

An accompanying meditation could focus on the fire in the belly. How intensely is it burning? Does it need some stoking, or is it burning brightly? The color of this chakra is yellow, so reflect on the dynamic of the fire, the shades of yellow, orange, red, and back to yellow. Tune into the lower triangle chakras.
